The decision from the Democratic National Committee to suppress the release of its own autopsy report concerning the last presidential race is shocking yet entirely predictable. Opposed to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a PR firm rather than a political organization committed to building grassroots capacities for winning elections.
An Environment Resistant to Internal Critique
Hesitant to challenge the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the DNC has stayed within the influence of the previous administration throughout 2025. Publishing an official autopsy could have demonstrated that the leadership are interested to foster honest conversation regarding the errors that enabled the former president to win re-election. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there are no lessons to glean from the electoral catastrophe of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a justification which was presented for withholding the document.
Major Failures an Analysis Might Have Addressed
Any valuable post-mortem with any value would tackle head-on a series of difficult topics. Among them are:
- Voter Alienation: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election was decisive in the close 2024 election.
- The Choice to Run: The determined choice of a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with a very late step-aside, has been criticized as robbing Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
- Failing Core Democratic Voters: Amid inflation, the campaign allegedly ceding to powerful financial backers and not managing to challenge the impact of big business.
- A Foreign Policy Factor: An unwillingness to shift a stance regarding a major international conflict is cited as losing significant blocs, notably with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
- Losing Youth Backing: Extensive evidence shows a significant decrease in votes for the candidate from young voters.
A History of Evasion
Choosing secrecy aligns with a recurring tendency to avoid difficult realities. This mirrors a dynamic in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's insistence on running for re-election right up until a catastrophic televised debate compelled a change.
Concurrently, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling pollsters that they did not want the incumbent to seek re-election.
Campaign Spending Questions
A thorough report would also probe questions about campaign spending, such as the amounts went to party strategists and advertising contractors over the course of a campaign which expended an enormous sum over a few months.
A Larger Problem
Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy points to a submission toward the existing power structure who engineered an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The message for the party's base – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not have a right to know what the insiders have learned based on an analysis compiled from extensive interviews.
A party incapable to honestly assess its mistakes is unlikely to escape the cycle that ended up being so helpful to the winning candidate.
