They're Repeating in America What They Performed with Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis projected his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the needy is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Finest Within Us

So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump develop in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to what makes it special and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both modesty and conviction, a blend that serious national faithful ought to accept.
