Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
